PRESIDENT’S CORNER
THANK YOU CHRIS STEVENS

Shoutout to Chris Stevens for doing her part to keep the club’s Facebook page updated with club activities as they happen. Chris posts often in real time during service projects and… meetings even when Lenny is lurking over her shoulder. She’s a brave woman :)

WHAT'S IN YOUR PAST?
On March 3rd, at the Council on Aging, we have an opportunity for members to take the first step to make deliveries to hoe bound persons: to request a free personal CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) check. You will need a valid Massachusetts DL or ID and to provide you SSN. Once cleared through this process you can make deliveries to home bound individuals. Rosaleen has more information on this project, and a lot of experience, and will help navigate the process.

BOARD MEETING
The Board of Directors will meet this Thursday February 20th at 5:30 PM at Lee Weed’s. All are invited. If you need Lee’s address, please check the Club Directory.

INVITE A NEW MEMBER
March 24th will be New Member Day. Club President Kathleen Murphy asks that we all plan on inviting one relative, friend, co-worker, or neighbor to join the club. Ask Kathleen for invitation cards that the club printed for this event.

FACT CHECKING IN AN ERA OF LIES
AND FAKE EVERYTHING
Joan Wong for The Rotarian

The latest edition of The Rotarian Magazine offers some excellent reading on “How to tell fact from fiction and trust the news again.” It’s a timely piece especially, and critically, in an election year when millions of Americans seek information to enlighten their choices at the ballot box.
With perceptive analysis and keen examples, the article explains fact checking, offers suggestions on how to stop fake news, and brings the subject into focus for Rotarians:
“Rotarians strive to abide by The Four-Way Test. So, when we read something inflammatory, what guides our decision to believe it? Do we trust what we read because it is the truth? Because it’s fair to all concerned? Or because it validates our existing worldview? Rotarians have an obligation to set aside partisan assumptions in pursuit of truth and fairness. A good start would be to acknowledge that we are all susceptible to misinformation. (In fact, studies have shown that the older we are, the more likely we are to be duped.) And we can choose to start listening to the experts who have been trying for decades to help us sort manipulation from satire, opinion from fact, and fiction from truth,” writes author Kim Lisagor Bisheff. A FUN FELLOWSHIP EVENING
View of the (mostly) RCoMH section

RCoMH president Kathleen Murphy, Swampscott Rotary president Debra Goldberg, and Marblehead Rotary president Gail Novack headlined an evening of fellowship at The Landing last week. The event, with pizza, drinks and a good time drew about two dozen people. It was called by Debra to share experiences and ideas on how to grow club memberships. She also proposed that the region’s clubs organize join activities. Stay tuned.

MHD SCHOLARSHIP DINNER…
IS NEXT WEEK
In anticipation of the scholarship fundraising dinner next week John Lindahl reminds us of what our club’s scholarship trust is, and what it does in an ongoing blurb series.
Marblehead Scholarship is a separate entity from our club, but its’ Board members are all Rotarians and must be approved by the club.  Marblehead Scholarship runs the website, www.MarbleheadScholarship.org, raises money, oversees the professional money manager and finds Second Chance Scholarship candidates. The club solicits and selects the college scholars.”

MARBLEHEAD MYSTERY

Local author Betty Breuhaus visited with the club to tell us about her new book “The Time Is Now”, part of the Woodford Harbor Mystery series. Woodford Harbor is sure to feel a lot like Marblehead and sure to take the reader into the town’s best – and least – known spots as the plot untwists and unfolds.
